PLASTIC SURGERY IN ISTANBUL FOR INTERNATIONAL PATIENTS
By Dr. Mehmet Sürmeli, MD, FEBOPRAS — European & National Board-Certified Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeon
Every year, patients from the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, the Gulf and beyond choose Istanbul for plastic surgery — and every year, many of them discover too late that “medical tourism” can mean very different things. Some clinics are built around volume. Dr. Mehmet Sürmeli’s practice is built around one principle above everything else: patient safety — and around one question: is surgery actually in this patient’s interest, and if so, which surgery, done how?
This page explains exactly how the process works when you live abroad: what happens before you book a flight, what your stay in Istanbul looks like, and what happens after you go home. No surprises is part of the treatment plan.
Patient safety first — by system, not by slogan
Before the journey, understand what you are choosing. Every step of Dr. Sürmeli’s practice is designed around safety:
- Full compliance with international guidelines — anesthesia, surgical planning, combination limits, recovery protocols — plus Dr. Sürmeli’s own stricter patient-safety criteria layered on top. Where international standards permit something he considers a risk not worth taking, his rule prevails, not the minimum standard.
- Strict patient selection is the first safety measure. The process begins with declining: patients who are not suitable candidates are told so honestly at the free photo pre-evaluation stage — before any money, flights or expectations are involved. Combinations he considers unsafe are refused, whatever the patient’s budget.
- An accredited hospital, verifiably. Surgery takes place at one of Türkiye’s foremost hospitals — accredited by JCI (Joint Commission International), the gold standard of global hospital quality, and the world’s first fully equipped hospital to earn LEED Platinum certification. These are independent, checkable credentials — not marketing claims.
- A board-certified surgeon, verifiably. European board certification (FEBOPRAS), Turkish national board certification, membership of ASPS (American Society of Plastic Surgeons — former Patient Safety Committee member) and ISAPS, and licensure by the Dubai (DHA) and Abu Dhabi (DOH) health authorities.
- An established team, not a rotating one. Dr. Sürmeli operates with the same experienced surgical team and anesthesia colleagues, refined over years of working together — every link in the chain is his own.
- The first week under your surgeon’s care — mandatory. The six-day minimum stay after surgery exists because almost all early concerns arise in the first week; it is a safety rule, not a travel suggestion.
This is why patient satisfaction stays consistently high: the patients who are operated on are the right patients, prepared the right way, in the right facility.
How it works — from your sofa to your surgeon
1. Start from your sofa — the free photo pre-evaluation.
Send your photos and medical information through the contact form below or by WhatsApp. Dr. Sürmeli personally reviews them and tells you honestly whether you are a suitable candidate — and for what. His patient-selection process is deliberately strict: if surgery is not in your interest, you will hear exactly that.
2. If you are a suitable candidate — your consultation.
Most international patients choose an online video consultation with Dr. Sürmeli: you discuss your goals, your health history and your surgical plan face to face, wherever you live. If you prefer to meet in person first, you can visit the clinic in Istanbul — and — because Dr. Sürmeli is UAE-licensed and periodically practices in Abu Dhabi and Dubai — an in-person meeting there is occasionally possible, though not arranged in advance.
Consultations are paid appointments — and the consultation fee is fully deducted from your surgery fee if you and Dr. Sürmeli decide to proceed. Your consultation is an investment in your plan, not an extra cost.
3. Planning your trip.
Once you and Dr. Sürmeli agree on the plan, the clinic team schedules your surgery date, arranges your accommodation and transfers, and tells you exactly what to prepare — medications to pause, tests to bring, what to pack. You arrive with everything already organized.
4. Surgery in Istanbul — at one of Türkiye’s foremost hospitals.
Dr. Sürmeli operates with his established surgical team and anesthesia colleagues at the JCI-accredited, LEED Platinum hospital described above — under full compliance with international guidelines plus his own stricter patient-safety rules. Istanbul’s cost structure means world-class surgery at exceptional value — not because standards are lower, but because operating costs are.
5. Recover comfortably — everything arranged.
International patients receive an all-inclusive package: four- and five-star hotel options, VIP airport transfers, and premium patient care throughout your stay.
6. The first week — under your surgeon’s care, by design.
Almost all early post-surgical concerns arise in the first week. That is exactly why Dr. Sürmeli asks every international patient to stay in Istanbul for a minimum of six days after surgery — so that the most important week of your recovery happens under your surgeon’s direct care, not over a phone line. After you fly home, your recovery continues to be followed remotely by the clinic team — a practice known since 2017 for strict, ethical follow-up: listening to patients, addressing their concerns, and solving them.
Why international patients choose Dr. Sürmeli
- Safety before everything. International guidelines fully applied — and where Dr. Sürmeli’s own criteria are stricter, his criteria win. Unsafe combinations are declined, whatever the budget.
- Strict patient selection, honest advice. Dr. Sürmeli filters candidates carefully and tells patients what most websites leave out. The goal is not more surgery — it is the right surgery, done well, on the right patient.
- A world-class hospital, verifiably. JCI-accredited and the world’s first LEED Platinum fully equipped hospital — standards you can check, not marketing claims.
- European board certification (FEBOPRAS) and Turkish national board certification; member of ASPS (American Society of Plastic Surgeons, former Patient Safety Committee member) and ISAPS; licensed by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) and the Abu Dhabi Department of Health (DOH).
- One surgeon, start to finish. The doctor who reviews your photos, consults with you, operates on you and follows your recovery is the same person.
- Value without compromise. A fully established Istanbul team delivering world-class results, with a transparent, itemized process for getting there.
- Istanbul is easy to reach. One of the world’s best-connected cities: direct flights from New York, London, most European capitals and every Gulf hub. Most visitors enter Türkiye with a simple e-visa or visa-free, depending on nationality.
The practice has been international from its first day: 96% of aesthetic patients in his 2017–2018 consultant practice traveled from abroad, and today's practice is largely built on returning patients and their referred family and friends — the strongest endorsement a surgeon can earn.

The procedures international patients ask about most
- Breast lift (mastopexy) — restoring shape after pregnancy, weight change or time.
- Breast lift with implants and breast augmentation — lift and volume planned together, honestly.
- Mommy makeover — combined breast and tummy restoration after motherhood, staged safely.
- Facelift & neck lift — natural results that look like rest, not surgery.
- Rhinoplasty — aesthetic refinement with breathing function protected.
Every plan is individual. The photo pre-evaluation tells you what applies to you.

Coming from the UAE or the Gulf?
Dr. Sürmeli is one of the few Istanbul plastic surgeons licensed by both the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) and the Abu Dhabi Department of Health (DOH) — and he periodically practices in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. We prepared a dedicated guide for patients from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain:

Follow-up here is measured in years, not weeks. Many international patients remain in structured follow-up 5+ years after surgery — sending photos, asking questions, planning future procedures — and it is common for Dr. Sürmeli to later operate on a patient's sister, mother or friend. That continuity is a deliberate design of the practice, not an accident.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to have surgery in Türkiye?
Safety depends on the surgeon and the system, not the country. Dr. Sürmeli is European board-certified and a member of ASPS and ISAPS; surgery takes place at a JCI-accredited hospital in full compliance with international guidelines — plus his own stricter patient-safety rules, beginning with declining patients who are not suitable candidates and refusing combinations he considers unsafe.
Do I need to visit Istanbul before deciding on surgery?
Not usually. For most patients, our free online pre-evaluation — based on your photographs and a structured medical questionnaire — and an online video consultation with Dr. Sürmeli are enough to establish candidacy and an initial surgical plan, which is then confirmed, and refined if needed, at your face-to-face examination in Istanbul before surgery. You travel once — for the surgery itself. Patients who prefer to meet in person first are always welcome at the Istanbul clinic. You can read how your pre-evaluation works before you start.
Will language be a problem?
Dr. Sürmeli consults in fluent English, and patient coordination is guaranteed in English and Turkish — from your first message to your last follow-up. For other languages, AI-supported translation works well at every remote stage: the pre-evaluation, planning, and your follow-up after you fly home. One requirement we state transparently: if English or Turkish is not comfortable for you, medical-legal regulations require that you are accompanied at the face-to-face consultation by your own sworn translator, competent in your main language, who also co-signs the consent forms. Arranging that translator is the patient’s own responsibility. The JCI-accredited hospital where surgery takes place also has an international patient department with interpreters in several languages — including Arabic, Russian, French, Spanish and Korean. This is the hospital’s own service: it must be requested well in advance, we cannot guarantee its availability, and it does not replace the sworn translator required for your consent forms.
Can I bring someone with me?
Yes, and it is encouraged. A companion can stay with you at the hotel, and the team will include them in the planning — transfers and accommodation are arranged for both of you.
How far in advance should I plan?
Most patients complete the photo pre-evaluation and consultation within a week or two, then choose a surgery date a few weeks to a few months ahead, depending on the season and their own schedule. Popular months fill earlier — start the pre-evaluation when you start thinking seriously.
How do I get a price?
Send your photos and medical information for the free pre-evaluation. Because every operation is planned individually, quotes are personal — you receive yours with the medical assessment, with the all-inclusive package spelled out item by item.
What happens after I fly home?
Your follow-up does not end at the airport. The clinic team follows your recovery remotely — photos, check-ins, and direct answers to your questions — a practice Dr. Sürmeli has run with strict, ethical standards since 2017.
